What Is a Dental Bridge?

A dental bridge is a restoration that’s used to replace one or several consecutive missing teeth. Bridges are used to replace anywhere from one to four teeth in a row. A dental bridge is comprised of two dental crowns and a number of replacement teeth called “pontics.” The crowns will be anchored onto your healthy adjacent teeth or dental implants depending on the type of bridge you get. The restoration can be made from a variety of durable, natural-looking materials.
Types of Dental Bridges

There are a couple of different types of dental bridges available depending on the location and number of missing teeth you have. Here are the two different options that are available.
Traditional Dental Bridge
If you have healthy teeth on both sides of the area where you are missing a tooth, a traditional bridge is the ideal option. The teeth that support the dental crowns are known as “abutment teeth, and they will be altered slightly so the bridge fits comfortably in the mouth. A dental bridge can normally be placed in a few visits to the dental office, and it is the more affordable type of bridge available.
Implant Bridge
For those who don’t have healthy adjacent teeth, the dental bridge can be supported by dental implants. These surgically implanted metal posts are surgically placed in the jawbone to act as the roots of the missing teeth. A dental bridge can be secured to the implants via abutments. Implant bridges can replace three or more missing teeth in a row. This type of bridge lasts longer than traditional bridges on average, and they help to prevent additional bone loss from occurring over time.
